Sofia "Creative City of the Cinema"
On 01.12.2014, Sofia joined the network of creative cities of UNESCO and was awarded the title "City of the Cinema". The certificate was handed over to the Mayor of Sofia Mrs. Yordanka Fandakova by the Director General of the International Organisation Ms. Irina Bokova.
Launched in 2004, the initiative marked its 10th anniversary in 2014 and it was in that particular year that Sofia was awarded the title "Creative City of the Cinema". That anniversary coincided with the year in which the cinema in Bulgaria celebrated its century-old jubilee.
According to UNESCO-Director General Ms. Irina Bokova the "Creative Cities Network - UNESCO" provides an exceptional opportunity for international cooperation and reflects our commitment to support the amazing creative and innovative potential in the name of expanding the possibilities for sustainable development".
The initiative aims to encourage the cities which have made and invested exceptional efforts in the creative industries as one of the major engines of sustainable urban development, social inclusion and expansion of influence on the culture of the entire world.
The five world cinema cities in the “Creative Cities Network - UNESCO" are:
- Bradford (UK)
- Sydney (Australia)
- Busan (Korea)
- Galway (Ireland)
- Sofia (Bulgaria)
